Fructose - Low Glycemic Index

  • Ideal for Diabetes Management
    • Little effect on blood glucose and insulin secretion
      • Fructose has little effect on blood glucose and does not stimulate the secretion of insulin. It thus offers important advantages in the practical dietary management of diabetes, particularly of the non-insulin dependent (NIDD) type.
      • Low dose fructose improve the glycaemic response to an oral glucose load in adults with type 2 diabetes, and this effect is not a result of stimulation of insulin secretion.(49)
      • In an acute study, 9 normal adults, 10 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance, and 17 subjects with type 2 diabetes received 50g glucose, sucrose or fructose, either alone or part of their meal. In the normal subjects and those with impaired glucose tolerance, the serum glucose and insulin responses were significantly reduced during the fructose test compared with glucose and sucrose test. The serum glucose response was also significantly smaller during the fructose tests in the diabetic subjects. (50)
      • Subject with type 2 diabetes exhibited 20% reduction in the blood glucose response and 80% reduction in the plasma insulin response after consumption of 25g fructose compared with consumption of 25g glucose. (51)
      • Studies show that glucose level of diabetics are better controlled on a fructose diet than on sucrose or starch diets.(48)
